We’ve always known that our live web cams carry the Aquarium experience—and a love of our oceans—across the globe. But we never expected this.

On April 8 Army Staff Sergeant Sean Holiday, on his fourth tour of duty in Afghanistan, called to say he was watching our Kelp Cam and discovered that his uncle, volunteer Andy Holiday, was narrating an underwater feeding. Acting quickly, our staff relayed the message to Andy, who was able to wave to his nephew from inside the exhibit, more than 7,000 miles away. It was a special moment for Andy, Sean and all the visitors who were made aware of what was happening.

Sean, thank you for your service, your connection to family, and your love of our oceans!

And to Andy – and all of our 1,200 volunteers – we celebrate you during National Volunteer Week.
